Jesus and His Mother: Mother's Day

Series: Stand-alone

May 09, 2021 | Dr. Wes George

Motherhood is a calling.

Motherhood is a chosen calling.

Luke 1:30-31 The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God. 31 “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus.

Motherhood is a rewarding calling.

Luke 1:42 And she cried out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!”

Psalm 127:3 Behold, children are a gift of the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward.

Motherhood is a painful calling.

Childbirth is physically painful.

Motherhood is emotionally painful.

Mary’s life was filled with emotional pain.

It was emotionally painful with the circumstances around conception being an unmarried, albeit engaged virgin.

It was emotionally painful with the circumstances around Simeon’s prophecy.

Luke 2:34-35 And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and for a sign to be opposed—35 and a sword will pierce even your own soul—to the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”

It was emotionally painful with the circumstances around fleeing to Egypt.

Jesus’s safety

Jesus’ birth causing the murder of other babies

It was emotionally painful with the criticisms of Jesus in His ministry.

It was emotionally painful with His crucifixion.

Jesus shows how to love your mother.

26 When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He *said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then He *said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own household.

Jesus obeyed the Ten Commandments.

Honor your father and mother. . .Exodus 20:12

He gave her emotional support.

26 When Jesus then saw His mother,. . .

He gave her practical support.

26. . .He *said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then He *said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own household.

He gave His mother a responsibility in relationship with John. He gave John responsibility for His mother.

1 Timothy 5:8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
