Jesus and His Church: When the Devil Wears A Dress

Series: Jesus and His Church

February 21, 2021 | Dr. Wes George

Passage: Revelation 2:18-29

Jesus commends Himself.

18 “And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write:

The Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet are like burnished bronze, says this:

He is divine.

“The Son of God”

He is discerning.

“who has eyes like a flame of fire”

He is decisive.

“and His feet are like burnished bronze,”

Jesus commends His church.

19 ‘I know your deeds, and your love and faith and service and perseverance, and that your deeds of late are greater than at first.

He commends their abiding love.

He commends their enduring faith.

He commends their growing deeds.

Jesus confronts His church.

20 ‘But I have this against you, that you tolerate the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, and she teaches and leads My bond-servants astray so that they commit acts of immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols.

The sin was tolerance.

Their tolerance the devil’s deception.

20 ‘But I have this against you, that you tolerate the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess

Their tolerance was the devil’s doctrine.

Their tolerance was the devil’s deeds.

The sinner was unrepentant.

21 ‘I gave her time to repent, and she does not want to repent of her immorality.

The judgment was severe.

22 ‘Behold, I will throw her on a bed of sickness, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of her deeds. 23 ‘And I will kill her children with pestilence, and all the churches will know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts; and I will give to each one of you according to your deeds.

Jesus challenges His church.

Keep what you have

25 ‘Nevertheless what you have, hold fast until I come.

The challenge to hold fast and keep what you have also comes with a promise that He will never leave us (Hebrews 13:5) , He will never lose us (John 10:28) ,  He will always love us (Romans 8:38-39)

Listen to what He says

29 ‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

Jesus commits to His church.

You can reign with Him.

26 ‘He who overcomes, and he who keeps My deeds until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations; 27 and he shall arule them with a rod of iron, as the vessels of the potter are broken to pieces, as I also have received authority from My Father;

You can have a relationship with Him.

28 and I will give him the morning star.

Revelation 22:16 I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things for the churches, I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.

You get Jesus.
