Series: When Everything Changed

Passage: Matthew 27:45-46

Jesus speaks 7 phrases from the cross.  If we’ll hear them today, it could change everything.

  1. Luke 23:34 “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”
  2. Luke 23:43 “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
  3. John 19:26-27 “When Jesus then saw his mother and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!”
  4. Matthew 27.46 “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

Jesus was bearing our sin.

1 Peter 2.24 “and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross..”

Jesus was receiving our punishment.

Isaiah 53.5 “He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.

  1. John 19.28 “I am thirsty”
  1. John 19.30 “It is finished!”

There is nothing we can add to Jesus’ work on the cross.  Salvation is a free gift of God’s grace.

Ephesians 2.8-9 “For it is by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves it is the gift of God; not as a result of works , so that no one may boast.”

  1. Luke 23.46 “Father, into your hands, I commit my spirit.”

Hear how terrible sin is, hear the punishment it deserves, and run from it.

Hear how loving Jesus is, hear the punishment He took on your behalf, and run to Him.
