Passage: 2 Kings 6:15-23

The battlefield reveals the urgency of prayer. 2 Kings 6:8-16

8 Now the King of Aram was warring against Israel;. . .15 Now the attendant of the man of God had risen early and gone out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was circling the city. And his servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?”

1 Peter 5:8: Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

Ephesians 6:11-12: 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

God provided a man of God to point the servant to see with spiritual eyes.

16 So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”

The battlefield reveals the impact of prayer. 17-23

It opens blinded eyes.

To see the deliverance of the Lord.

Then Elisha prayed and said, “O LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” And the LORD opened the servant’s eyes and he saw;. . . 17a

To see the desperation apart from the Lord.

When they had come into Samaria, Elisha said, “O LORD open the eyes of these men, that they may see.” So the LORD opened their eyes and they saw; . . .20

To see invisible armies in spiritual realms.

Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them. . . and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.  16-17

It blinds enemies’ eyes.

18 When they came down to him, Elisha prayed to the LORD and said, “Strike this people with blindness, I pray.” So He struck them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.

It opens doors of ministry. 21-23

21 Then the king of Israel when he saw them, said to Elisha, “My father, shall I kill them? Shall I kill them?” 22 He answered, “You shall not kill them. Would you kill those you have taken captive with your sword and with your bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink and go to their master.” 23 So he prepared a great feast for them; and when they had eaten and drunk he sent them away, and they went to their master. And the marauding bands of Arameans did not come again into the land of Israel.

Remember in our prayer the presence, provision, and providence of God.

Prayer is experiencing the presence of God.

  • Here shown in an army of horses and chariots of fire.
  • Sometimes it is a still small voice.
  • Sometimes it is fire falling from heaven.
  • Sometimes it is infallible word of God. . .I will be with you always.  I will never leave you nor forsake you.

Prayer is receiving the provision of God. For Elisha. . .

  • It has been a plow & oxen. 1 Kings 19:15-21
  • It has been life in a dead body. 2 Kings 4:32-37
  • It has been water that fills trenches. 2 Kings 3:16-27
  • It has been oil that fills empty vessels. 2 Kings 4:1-7
  • It has been borrowed axe heads floating. 2 Kings 6:1-7

Prayer is trusting in the providence of God.

  • He is sovereign over kings, armies, widows in poverty, grieving mothers in prosperity, his enemies & His followers.
  • His providence delivers from desperation.
  • His providence gives peace despite circumstances.
  • His providence does not excuse indifference or inactivity in regard to ministry and kingdom advance.
