God For Us: No Condemnation in Christ

Series: God For Us

Passage: Romans 8:1-8

You are free in Christ. (Position)

You always think about being free against the backdrop of being in prison.  Literal prisons, POWs held captive in terrible circumstances.  Great and glorious day when they are set free. Prisons of addictions, fears, depression, physical limitations . . .this is speaking of spiritual bondage and spiritual freedom.

The Scriptures declare no more condemnation for sin.

1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

The Spirit delivers, so there is no more domination by sin.

2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

You are focused on the Spirit. 5-8

Verses 5-11 describes  or explains the work of the Spirit in the life of the believer and the futility of the life of one who does not have the Spirit.  It is not prescriptive or an exhortation, but rather it is an explanation of believers and unbelievers.

5 For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.

A mind set on the flesh is death.

6 For the mind set on the flesh is death

A mind set on the Spirit is life and peace.

6b , but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace,

So a depraved mind leads to death, while a renewed or Spirit focused mind leads to life and peace.  Jesus is life and peace, so the Spirit again is pointing us to Jesus.
