Passage: Colossians 1:13-23

The Father has provided rescue for us and transferred us. 13

13 For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son,

Jesus is preeminent in His redemption of lost sinners.

14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Jesus Christ is preeminent in His revelation of God. 15

15a He is the image of the invisible God,

Jesus Christ is preeminent in His creation of all things. 15b-17

15. . .the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.

He is the source of creation. 16

16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him

He is the glory or goal of creation. 16

for Him” His pleasure and glory.  Creation is not for us but for Him.  Our capacity to experience, appreciate, and understand all His creation is limited.  As I have often said if He created for us, then God overbuilt.

He is the sustainer of creation. 17

And in Him all things hold together. . .

Jesus Christ is preeminent in His church. 18a

He is also head of the body, the church;. . .

Jesus Christ is preeminent in resurrection. 18b

And He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead,.

Jesus Christ is preeminent in all things. 18c-19

So that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him,

Jesus Christ is preeminent in reconciliation. 20-23

20 and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven. 21 And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, 22 yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach— 23 if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister.

His reconciliation is far-reaching in its scope.

20 “. . . all things . . .whether things on earth or things in heaven”

His reconciliation is peace-providing through His cross.

20 “. . .having made peace through the blood of His cross”

His reconciliation is God-glorifying in its purpose.

20 “. . .to reconcile all things to Himself

His reconciliation is life-changing by His death.

21 And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, 22 yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death,. . .

His reconciliation is providentially-purposeful for sanctification and presentation.

22. . . in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach—

His reconciliation is providentially-confirmed by perseverance.

23 if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister.
