Facts about the Hindu World
-
The majority of Hindus live in India – Approximately 95% of the world’s Hindus live in India, though there are significant populations in Nepal, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and diaspora communities worldwide.
-
Diverse beliefs and practices – Hinduism is not a monolithic religion. It encompasses a wide range of beliefs, traditions, and practices, which vary by region and community. This diversity is reflected in the different gods and goddesses that Hindus may worship, such as Vishnu, Shiva, and Durga.
- Belief in karma and reincarnation – Hindus believe in the law of karma, which dictates that one's actions (good or bad) will affect their future lives. This ties into the concept of reincarnation, where the soul is reborn in a new body after death, continuing a cycle of birth, death, and rebirth (samsara).
- Dharma – Dharma, often translated as "duty" or "righteousness," is a central concept in Hinduism. It refers to the ethical and moral obligations that individuals must follow based on their role in society and stage of life.
-
Caste system – Historically, Hindu society was organized around a caste system, a hierarchical social structure. While this system has been officially abolished in modern India, its cultural impact remains significant in some areas.
-
Moksha – The ultimate goal in Hinduism is to attain moksha, or liberation from the cycle of reincarnation. Moksha represents spiritual enlightenment and unity with the divine.
